There are many things that are considered important and vital to the success of any business. Perhaps one of the most important factors to remember is the lasting relationships forged between a business and its customers. In order to establish a strong bond between the two, we need to get to know each other a little first!
1. Who is the founder of Tand Swimwear?
My name is Taeisha, it's so nice to meet you! I was 22 years old when I first founded Tand in 2017.
2. What experience did you have previously to prepare you for this business?
I graduated with a degree in Bachelor's of Commerce major in Commercial Law, which helped pave the way with some of the basic business knowledge I needed to get me started. I also frequently discuss things with my parents who have successfully run their own businesses since they were around my age. First hand real life insight into this competitive world has been undeniably valuable for me.
In terms of fashion industry experience, I actually don't have any! I mean sure I did textiles in high school and work experience with Carla Zampatti in Year 10, but I wouldn't say they really prepared me for this experience. I have been learning as I go, which has been incredibly nerve-racking yet fun at the same time!
3. What made you want to start Tand?
I've always wanted to start my own business! In addition to that, I always felt that I couldn't find very flattering swimsuits. So, I set out to design pieces that would be flexible to fit multiple body shapes while also being flattering. I knew I wouldn't be able to easily create one style to fit every shape, so instead I wanted to create each piece to flatter a different body shape.
4. What is your creative process?
I usually start by brainstorming on some designs on paper. I play around with cuts, straps, embellishments, patterns, colours and fabrics that I love. After I've found something I'm happy with I will then create a new photoshopped version of it on my computer to get a really good idea of how it would look on a real woman. I take into account skin tones and body shapes when I'm designing in order to cater to as many women as I can.
5. What does a normal day look like for you?
I actually have a full time job Monday-Friday. I usually get to work at 6am and finish around 4pm, after that I have some time to work on things for Tand (e.g designing, working marketing strategies, sending/replying to emails and organising new photoshoots). All in a day's work and it is honestly a lot of fun!
6. How did you find your manufacturer and why did you choose them?
I searched for a reliable and trustworthy manufacturer for weeks. Every night I was on my computer just doing research! I reached out to so many different manufacturers trying to get a feel for their company and if we would be able to work together effectively. I needed someone knowledgable in the industry yet flexible enough in their process to cater for a newbie like me. Eventually, I came across a manufacturer from Brazil that seemed very professional and after a lot of back and forth discussion via email, I found confidence in them to start my first line.
7. What are some of your hobbies?
I really love playing video games, watching Netflix, hanging with my dogs, snowboarding when I get the chance, relaxing by the beach, going dancing and exploring new places to wine and dine.
8. What are you favourite movies/TV shows?
So you can get an insight into my vibe, I love movies like The Dark Knight, Inception, The Da Vinci Code, Logan, Deadpool, Goodfellas, The Godfather II, Transformers, any Quentin Tarantino movie, and all Disney movies!
My favourite TV Shows are Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, The Punisher, Game of Thrones, Vikings, Peaky Blinders, Spartacus and Friends.
9. What are the plans for the future of Tand?
My plans are to continue to grow Tand as much as I can! In the beginning it's always a rough start trying to get your name out there and to develop the trust between the company and the public. It will take some time to reach that stage, and after that I intend to maintain the key philosophy behind Tand and why I started the brand. In addition, I will be trying to expand my collection even more to plus size and eco friendly solutions; things that I'm unsure how to incorporate at the moment but definitely where I want to direct my company to.
10. If you could give any advice to new start ups, what would it be?
I'm sure you already know the most common advise to never stop believing in yourself and why you started in the first place. I consider this as daily motivation to get you through the tough times, but also to keep you grounded and realistic about your expectations.
My advice would be to do lots of research. Ask strangers, friends and family about every detail from what they think of your designs to what they would expect from the product and how much they would be willing to pay. The mark of a true leader or manager is not to just make decisions, but to ask all those around them for their opinions in order to make the most informed decision they can.
It is also important not to let your momentum stop (too much). It's totally fine to hit a wall and not know what to do, just don't let that stagger you for too long! I usually overcome this by doing some research online and finding out about other people who have similar situations, gathering idea's from those around me and just simply putting pen to paper and brainstorming.
Another important thing to remember is that you always have to be thinking 10 steps ahead. You need back up plans for back up plans and need to always try your best to be in control of your surroundings. However, you also need to understand that you can't possibly predict every alternative. It's as much about being properly prepared as it is about being flexible and adaptable.
